Celebrate Arbor Day

Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.

Most holidays remind us of past events, but Arbor Day, set aside for the planting and care of trees, is a nationally-celebrated holiday that looks toward the future. That is truly conservation, or the the wise use of all our natural resources for the permanent good of the people.

Arbor Day, first celebrated in 1872, reversed a growing trend in forest destruction, and increased educational efforts related to forest conservation. The dedication of one day each year to tree planting with fitting ceremonies has grown in popularity. Arbor Day is now observed in every state, the date varying with the region. The idea goes beyond the mere planting of trees, with an essential part of the program focused on caring for existing trees and forests.

Georgia will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, February 19th.  How can you help?

•    Plant a tree following proper planting techniques and avoid driveways, streets, sidewalks or patios.
•    Avoid positioning trees too close to homes; roots that run into foundations will be killed.
•    Prevent tree damage by not using weed trimmers around trees.
•    Remove parasitic vines on trees.
•    Water trees well in dry months using a soaker hose.
•    If you suspect illegal tree clearing, ask questions right away.
•    If needed, contact your county arborist at (770) 822-7500.
•    Get involved in development processes early by attending public meetings
