By Amari Blackman – Communications Intern at Gwinnett Water Resources
Landon, a high school intern with a deep passion for environmental conservation, is a shining example of how the Adopt-A-Stream (AAS) program empowers others to make a tangible impact in their communities. Through his volunteer efforts with Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful and Gwinnett Water Resources, Landon has taken on the responsibility of adopting Lilburn’s entire Bridgewater Creek watershed. This expansive area includes four sampling sites, a challenge many would find daunting. However, after learning strategies to support local ecosystems, Landon has discovered a sense of joy and fulfillment that’s drawn him closer to his goal of improving water quality.
Rising to the Challenge
Taking on an entire watershed has been no small task. While the typical volunteer collects samples once a month, Landon commits to testing his streams on a weekly basis. This frequent sampling allows him to monitor changes more closely. He’s learning how to identify contamination sources, such as pet waste, by monitoring E. coli levels. “Having four sites means more data to analyze, which is helping me understand how different factors contribute to water quality issues,” he explained.
But his efforts don’t stop there. Understanding the bigger picture, Landon leverages his growing AAS knowledge to help educate the community about water pollution. From picking up trash to properly disposing of pet waste, he’s seen how small everyday steps can lead to major changes. “If people are more aware of the impact their actions have on the environment, they’re more likely to do something about it,” he said.
Understanding Water
The challenges facing streams, such as erosion, flooding, pollution, and loss of habitat, are driven by increased urban development and land use changes in Gwinnett’s watersheds, along with potentially harmful behaviors from a growing population who may not be aware of their impact. These environmental issues threaten the health of humans and aquatic life.
Through hands-on experience with Adopt-A-Stream, participants can develop a deeper understanding of the importance of clean water. “Before this, I didn’t really know how interconnected everything was. Streams flow into rivers, and that impacts larger ecosystems,” Landon said. Even though his work focuses on small streams, he is aware that his efforts have a far-reaching impact on preserving water quality.
Landon hopes his work will inspire others to get involved through volunteering or adopting a stream themselves.
Get Involved and Make a Difference
Landon’s unwavering dedication is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to making an impact. All you need is passion and initiative! Whether you’re a student like Landon, a parent, a recent retiree, or just someone looking to contribute to environmental conservation, the Adopt-A-Stream program offers a meaningful way to give back to your community.
The best part? It’s free! There are no costs involved in adopting a stream or participating in the program, and there is an accessible entry point for everyone. You don’t need to be an expert to get started.
By adopting a stream, volunteering for water quality testing, or simply educating yourself and others, you, too, can help protect and preserve Gwinnett’s valuable water resources.
