Event Details
Georgia Adopt-a-Stream enables citizens to collect baseline water quality data to both observe the conditions of our local streams and become more aware of pollution and water quality issues. Unfortunately, many streams in Gwinnett do not currently meet established state water quality standards. That’s why we need your help!
In this unique course, participants will learn how to observe and evaluate the health of local streams by examining erosion, water clarity, vegetation, and other natural features that shape stream ecosystems in our area. The class will be primarily observation-based rather than focused on chemical or bacterial testing. Participants will spend time in the stream taking cross-section measurements, assessing natural features, and learning how different environmental factors influence stream health. We will also be partaking in a watershed survey, and showing how residence can observe what could be affecting their local streams environment.
You and your family, co-workers, group, etc. could serve as official “adopters” of a portion of a creek or stream by periodically monitoring its condition with supplies, training, and certifications in chemical, bacterial and macroinvertebrate testing provided by Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and the Department of Water Resources. To find out more about the Adopt-a-Stream program, visit gwinnettcb.org/adopt-a-stream/.
Please note: while this opportunity is open to the general public, only Gwinnett County volunteers qualify for our equipment lending program. Out of county residents should contact their local coordinator to see how to acquire sampling kits in your respective area.
