Gwinnett County to Host Local Nod to National Recycling Event

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Teams up with Solid Waste Management for America Recycles Day Celebration at Gwinnett County Fairgrounds on November 4

Lawrenceville, Ga. – October 24, 2023 – From its Adopt-A-Road and Green & Healthy Schools programs to its annual cleanup events and community education initiatives, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful (GC&B) is well-known for its role of Connecting People and Resources for a Sustainable Gwinnett.  As a significant element of its efforts to promote green practices at home, work, school, and the community, this Keep America Beautiful affiliate encourages residents to recycle year-round. With the national observation of America Recycles Day just around the corner on November 15, GC&B and its partners at Gwinnett County Solid Waste Management are preparing for a local celebration of its own. Gwinnett County’s observation of America Recycles Day will take place Saturday, November 4, at Gwinnett County Fairgrounds between 9 a.m. and noon.

Representing the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States, America Recycles Day is a Keep America Beautiful (KAB) initiative launched in 1994. Last year, KAB affiliates and volunteers recycled over 14.9 MILLION POUNDS of recyclables. In addition to the act of recycling, the day is intended to encourage the use of products made from recycled materials. Recycling helps reduce landfill waste and conserve precious natural resources such as forests.

“While many of our residents take advantage of the county’s curbside recycling program, some items can’t be recycled at the curb,” said Schelly Marlatt, GC&B Executive Director. “The Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful website offers a database of places where you can drop off your glass and difficult-to-recycle items any time of year. What’s great about our America Recycles Day event is that it presents a one-stop-shop where our neighbors can rid their garages, storage units, attics, and basements of items they no longer need that may be taking up space unnecessarily and adding to the clutter.”

Items that will be accepted at Gwinnett’s America Recycles Day event include:

  • Electronics – Recycling is free except for TVs, monitors, and printers. Attendees are asked to bring cash – $35 for projection or console TVs, $15 per monitor or flat-screen TV, and $5 per printer.
  • Paint –Both latex and oil paint will be accepted at this event. Collection is limited to ten gallons per vehicle. Latex paint cans must contain 25% wet paint in order to be recycled.
  • Tires – Limit eight tires per vehicle – no dealer tires, please. Tires must have rims removed and be free of water and debris.
  • Paper shredding – Limited to five copier paper boxes
  • Textiles – gently used clothes, shoes, etc.

Marlatt also issued a call for volunteers to collect items from attendees’ cars and help direct traffic during the event. Prospective volunteers are encouraged to register at https://www.cervistech.com/acts/console.php?console_id=0024&console_type=event. Volunteers will receive an event t-shirt while supplies last. Gwinnett County Fairgrounds is located at 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. To learn more about this event and other Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful programs, visit www.GwinnettCB.org
